Cotton Days 2019 Part 1

Cotton Days Parade 2019 Photo by Bill DeSilva

Before the tractor pulls there is a parade. Color Country Antique Machinery Association (CCAMA) members line up for the Cotton Day parade in Washington, Utah.  I go wait on the sidelines for them to come. I hear the roar of the tractors and see the sunlight shining through the American flags waving in the air. It is truly a sight to behold.

I loved the smiles on the driver's faces and the way they waved at the crowds. Watch the video of CCAMA in the parade.

And then there was the Kid's Tractor Pull. Andrew, his son  Nicholas Hall, and Jonah Mampel did a really good job of helping and encouraging the children that participated.
Watch video

Trophies and candy were handed out after.

CCAMA members were all getting ready for the tractor pull. they drove their tractors up on the big scale to get weighed and got their numbers to put on their tractors.

The tractor pull began with the 1500-2000 POUND Class and then the 2000-2500 POUND Class. There were first time pullers at the event. Kaitlyn drove a 1948 Farmall cub and Danie Farley Drove an International Harvestor A. They are all in the video.

A Rich History Remembered: CCAMA Vintage Tractor Caravan

CCAMA spnsored vintage tractor caravan,
Labor Day Weekend.
Going over the Summit, Utah overpass.

The caravan of vintage tractors traveled along Old Highway 91 from Cedar City, Utah to Lyon's Park in Parowan under clear blue skies. Some hats blew off along the way but were quickly retrieved. It was a great ride !

The vintage tractor caravan rolled along
Old Highway 91.

Imagine driving 7 mph down a highway.

Enjoying the wild sunflowers along the roadside.

Taking in the scent of summer grasses and shrubs.

Studying the variegated blues of distant mountains.

Hearing the American flags flapping in the breezes, the rumbling of the vintage tractors...

Time to reflect, inspired to dream a bit, and perhaps moved to appreciate your life.

Sheridan Hansen, our caravan organizer, said something at our break in Summit, Utah that I had not thought of before.  By doing the caravan we remember our predecessors who drove and worked on these tractors back in the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, and 70's. and keep it alive for people in the future to enjoy.
It made me look deeper into the history of the farm tractor.

The farm tractor is one of the most important and easily recognizable technological components of modern agriculture in the United States. Its development in the first half of the twentieth century fundamentally changed the nature of farm work, significantly altered the structure of rural America, and freed up millions of workers to be absorbed into the rapidly growing manufacturing and service sectors of the country. The tractor represents an important application of the internal combustion engine, rivaling the automobile and the truck in its economic impact.

A tractor is basically a machine that provides machine power for performing agricultural tasks. Tractors can be used to pull a variety of farm implements for plowing, planting, cultivating, fertilizing, and harvesting crops, and can also be used for hauling materials and personal transportation. In the provision of motive power, tractors were a replacement for human effort and that of draft animals, both of which are still used extensively in other parts of the world. You can read more here: Economic History of Tractors in the United States
William J. White, Research Triangle Institute

At a time when farms are out of sight and out of mind for most people in the US, it makes events like this caravan very important to educate and inspire children and adults who would otherwise never know where their food comes from. there is also the being outdoors and puting your hands in the soil and on and on I could go.

Not only is the caravan fun but doing this will keep a rich history of these tractors and the people who drove them alive.

June,
Could you please send out to everyone.

We have been instructed to park our tractors at the fairgrounds in the triangular field bordered on the west by N 3rd east st and on the south by Clinic Way.
The east end is marked by traffic cones and four big rocks. All tractors should be west of that point.
This is about 100 yards west of where we normally park so we’re going to be jammed up a bit. In order to have room left to park our trucks and trailers we may have to make two rows of tractors .
So much as possible please try to not waste space and leave as much room as possible for others.

Vintage Tractor Caravan To The Sheep Parade

Vintage tractor caravan to Main St for the sheep parade in Cedar City, Utah
The tractors were lined up at the Diamond Arena in Cedar City and the flags on our tractors were waving in the breezes.

I rode tandem on my husband's Allis Chalmers while making this caravan video to Main St. There is nothing like being in a tractor caravan with the roar of the engines, the morning sun spilling over the mountain and the sight of rabbit bush on the side of the road luminous with sunlight.

I had always stayed back and photographed from the curb but this time I got to ride in the Sheep Parade.

Cedar Livestock Festival Tractor & Draft Horse Pull 2015 PART 1

Cedar Livestock Festival was amazing, fast paced, exciting and full of action ! One after the other the tractors and pullers and draft horses with teams gave us their all. The engines rumbled through our flesh, the chains clanked and hoofs thundered on the earth and the crowds just roared !

The following video is Part 1, a  full account of this event with these giant gorgeous draft horses and your awesome vintage tractors. I forgot to grab a program and counted on the announcers content to explain names of pullers and models, year, FS or FS+. June sent me a program but I do not have Office to open it up and Sheridan has one for me if I need it. I learn a lot about identifying your names and about your tractors from these programs.

Video Part 1 Features:

Treyson Hansen ( High Point CCAMA Winner of 2014 )
Leroy Brady
Tommy Cooper
Sam with his 1952 Massey Ferguson TO30

CCAMA has A Store On ZAZZLE !

John Kirkland our CCAMA President gave me the okee dokee and I have
begun a CCAMA store which has endless possibilities. All royalties go to CCAMA. a great way to support your club and I welcome any ideas or photographs you would like on a mug, card, poster or most any product offered by ZAZZLE.

Paul Moen found this tractor in Torrey, Utah. Allis Chalmers vintage tractor Model W Speed Patrol Grader could fit industrial applications. Besides using them for street maintenance, small construction companies used these for road and driveway construction from 1940-1949. By 1949 there were over 3,700 of these made. This image is also on the t-shirt where a pocket might be and has the name and model written below the image. This comes with a variety of shirt designs and colors to choose from.

I am designing everyday and Zazzle has a sale on everyday. For today November 12, Zazzle is taking 60% off T-Shirts and 20% overall on other items.  Most items are able to be customized that means you can "x" out the original image and text and put on your own and CCAMA will still get that royalty from what you purchase. Also if you enter through our links from this CCAMA site you can shop all over Zazzle and CCAMA will still get a royalty even if it was not bought in our  store.

You couldn't ask for a nicer day then this. The grandstands were full and the participants in the pull and the safety team were amazing to watch.

John Kirkland explained the basic safety procedure of tractor pull. ( paraphrased as close as I could )

When they flag you stop. Let them hook you up. Put your hands in the air, after you put it into neutral, feet on the brake, hands in the air. They will hook you and when they give you the OK you can tighten the chain and begin your pull. Watch the flagman all the time cause if there are any problems, when he flags you off you need to stop. He will stop you when you get to the end. When you unhook, you back your tractor up, take her out of gear, put on the brake and your hands in the air again and the flagman will tell you when you're clear.

Kip Hansen thanked the Iron County Fair royalty that was with us which was followed by a big applause. Kip continues:

Our organization that we're a part of here is with the Color Country Antique Machinery Association. Now color country, you people, you live here, you understand we live in color country. But us tractors guys, color means something else entirely different than that. If you're an old tractor guy, generally you have your color. And some of us, they don't usually ask you what kind of tractor do you have, they ask, "What color do you do?"  You know there is John Deere green and Farmall red, and of course we don't want to forget Allis Chalmer's brilliant orange; Minneapolis Moline's prairie gold... Oliver meadow green, so its about the colors too but the most important colors are the colors of our nation, the red, white, and blue and I think it would be appropriate before we go on through the program right now that everyone right now turn and face the flag......

Everyone stood and faced our American flag. The sound of our voices  were then heard  as we recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

Annette Hansen gave us the Invocation, Opening Prayer which affirmed and brought together a diversified crowd of people and made whole our event.

David Christensen did a great job as announcer and fostered participation and showmanship with the drivers and the crowd as well as easy to understand information about the pull and the tractors for the crowd.  I was thrilled how the drivers waved to the crowd and hearing the roar of the crowd.

June Salisbury, our Secretary, took care of everything from recording the distances, to handing out the ribbons and trophies and more. The beautiful trophies were given to us by the City of Parowan. Rosie Kirkland, our Treasurer is working right there with June helping to make this a wonderful event for you all.

THANK YOU !

I love a parade, don't you?

Riding on a tractor can be so much fun. Riding on a tractor in a parade is double the fun, I think. Riding on a tractor in a tractor pull must be triple the fun but we shall get into that further on down the page.
You can click on the pictures to enlarge
them.

I love sitting in that special tractor seat next to my husband. There is nothing like it. And to my surprise I am not the only wife who thinks this way. I saw a few familiar faces two at a time on one tractor during the parade ! I think the wives will agree with me it is a very special experience. You will see them in the video and also see Leroy Brady with his dogs, Shredder and Butch, riding right up there on the engine. I saw drivers waving to the crowds and the crowds waving back with happy smiles. Children held their own bag in anticipation for candy that was tossed to the curbs from parade participants. You couldn't ask for better weather. I know that the weather report hadn't looked very good all through the week. But suddenly there was a change and we enjoyed blue skies and gorgeous expanding white clouds which waited on us till we were done.

This parade is fun because we get to do it twice. We turn around at the end and go back the way we came which allows us to see the folks on the other side of the road and see each other.

The 3 little clouds I saw before the parade kept expanding and when the parade was over well, see for yourself in the photograph above. Big huh? But the day remained dry that was until Paul Moen broke the sled on his second run in the 4000-4500 class. He was the only participant in that class. While Paul Moen got all lined up for his pull he took off and pulled that sled father than anyone had. We all thought, "Wow, Paul's making history !" And then the no pull hand signals were waved and we all sat back down. He tried again and the sled would just not move. Then it began to rain a bit . Watch the video below.

The day was done for most. the grandstands emptied. The sled was hauled off the track and the sled doctors were at work with exploratory surgery. See below.

Rain or shine, broke or running smooth, it is always a good day when these events come. The men and women and teens who drive these tractors are tough and seem to take things in stride.

Farmers are philosophical. They have learned that it is less wearing to shrug than to beat their breasts.
